Beer driven bikies | Townsville Bulletin News: "MAN who was so desperate for beer he threw a drain cover through a pub window in a bid to steal some had to flee empty handed after being caught in the act.
Stuart police officer-in-charge acting Senior Sergeant Paul Breutkreutz said the incident occurred just after 11pm at Riverside Tavern in Douglas on Sunday night.
``Some offenders have gone to the tavern, arriving on a red and white trail bike,'' Sen-Sgt Breutkreutz said. ``One of the offenders has gone to a drain area and lifted the concrete drain cover and thrown the drain cover through the front glass door, causing it to smash.''
Sen-Sgt Breutkreutz said once inside the man made a beeline for the beer, which was when everything began to come unstuck.
``He's then entered the tavern in the bar area near a big beer fridge, grabbed some beer in a purple bag and at about this time, one of the staff members who was still at the hotel came from the office to the front of the bar,'' he said.
``The offender has decided to run from the shop and flee when spotted.
``He has jumped over the bar and dropped the bag and left.''"
